About the city of Hingham, MA
Hingham is located in north Plymouth County, 14 miles southeast of Boston and is home to a population of a little over 22,000 (according to the 2010 Census). Hingham has a total area of over 26 square miles – 4.1 of which is water- and is bordered on the east by Cohasset, and Scituate, on the south by Norwell and Rockland, on the west by Weymouth, and on the north by Hingham Bay and Hull.
The town was dubbed “Bare Cove” by the English who first colonized it in 1633, but two years later was incorporated as a town under the name Hingham. Hingham is known for playing some notable roles during World War II. The town was a major supplier of ammunition for the war. The Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot covered 990 acres and in 1945 employed over 2,400 people. The base was decommissioned in 1961 and today much of that land is occupied by the town’s Bare Cove Park.
The Hingham Shipyard, that existed from 1942-1945, employed over 23,000 people and produced over 200 World War II vessels including destroyer escorts and tank landing ships. After the war, the old shipyard was converted into an industrial park and is now home to a vibrant marina, condominium, restaurant and retail shopping area. Also during World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt authored This is America, a book that used Hingham as the quintessential American town during wartime. She concluded the book noting that Hingham had the most beautiful Main Street in America. Today Hingham’s Main Street remains much the same. Hingham’s historical charm and proximity to Boston continue to make the town a desirable place to live. Hingham is an easy drive down Routes 24 and 140 to New Bedford.
